An NYPD officer driving an unmarked patrol car struck and killed a woman who was lying on the street in Brooklyn on Wednesday night, police officials and witnesses said.
Officials said the plainclothes officers were driving an undercover Toyota minivan north on Pennsylvania Avenue in East New York when they struck an unidentified woman at 6:10 p.m.
Police said the woman was lying in the middle of the road before being hit by the minivan.
She suffered head injuries and was taken to Brookfield Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
A TLC driver who was behind the minivan said at the scene of the accident that he saw the unmarked vehicle swerve in front of him and then saw a woman on the ground.
At the time, the man was riding in a taxi with a nurse who asked him to pull over to help the seriously injured woman.
The officers who remained at the scene and called an ambulance appeared “scared,” said the driver, who did not wish to be named.
The NYPD Highway Collision Investigation Unit is investigating the fatal crash and is working to identify the woman.
