President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday nominated former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as his candidate for U.S. attorney general.
In the announcement Posted President Trump praised Bondi's work against “deadly drug trafficking” on Truth Social. Trump's selection came just hours after Republican Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew from consideration.
“For too long, a partisan Justice Department has been used as a weapon against me and other Republicans, and that will no longer be the case,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “Pam will refocus the Department of Justice on its original purpose: fighting crime and making America safe again.”
President Trump highlighted Bondi's nearly 20 years as a prosecutor and emphasized her tough stance on violent crime, which helped make Florida's streets safer. As Florida's first female Attorney General, she fought the opioid crisis, targeted drug trafficking, and reduced the devastating number of fentanyl-related deaths.
According to the announcement, President Trump also recognized Bondi's extraordinary efforts during her first term, earning her a role on the Opioid and Substance Abuse Commission, further demonstrating her dedication to saving lives. Gaetz announced early Thursday that he was withdrawing his candidacy for attorney general. He told X that his nomination had “unduely impeded” Trump's transition efforts.
