Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Thursday that he would have Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrested the same day pursuant to a controversial International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant.
As reported by Breitbart News, the ICC has issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant over the Gaza war started by the Iranian-backed Palestinian terrorist group Hamas.
Israel called the decision anti-Semitic and the Biden-Harris administration condemned the ICC for the decision, but it was the same administration that reversed sanctions imposed on the ICC by President Donald Trump.
At a press conference, Prime Minister Trudeau responded to a reporter's question about whether Canada would enforce the warrant:
First of all, as Canada has always said, it is very important that everyone abides by international law. This is what we have been asking since the beginning of the conflict. We are one of the founding members of the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice. We uphold international law and comply with all regulations and judgments of international courts. This is who we are as Canadians. At the same time, we must continue our efforts to resolve this terrible situation. We need to see aid flowing to those facing hunger. [sic] And sick. We must see all the hostages released. We need to see Hamas lay down its arms. We condemn Hamas's continued actions. We need a ceasefire that protects civilians. We need to get back on track toward a two-state solution where a peaceful Israel and a peaceful Palestinian state coexist. These are things that Canada has been working on, but at the same time we have to recognize as Canadians that it's very difficult for members of different communities in this country. We must remember who we are, be there for each other, and understand that people are angry and sad, but we all seek peace and stability with all our might. Don't forget.
Trudeau reiterated his remarks in French, saying everyone needs to respect the decisions of international organizations.
He was wrong about his claims of “famine” in Gaza and about Canada's obligation under international law to respect ICC decisions. Canada simply needs to break away from the Rome Statute that established it.
Prime Minister Trudeau also referred to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where South Africa has brought charges of “genocide” against Israel. reportedly Following donations to South Africa's ruling party from Iran and Qatar.
Ironically, while criticizing Israel, the ICJ refused to label Israel's war in Gaza as “genocide.”
