Los Angeles City Councilman Hugo Sotomartínez said Thursday on MSNBC's “The Jose Díaz Balart Report” that the city of Los Angeles passed a sanctuary city ordinance that will help the city implement President-elect Donald Trump's future immigration plan. He said it prevented him from using resources.
Mr. Díaz-Balart said, “Could you please explain the definition of a sanctuary city for Los Angeles?''
“Well, the federal government has a lot of power over its resources, but the city of Los Angeles is not going to use or cooperate with the city's resources to force his deportation,” Sotomartinez said. I think they wanted to make it clear that there was no such thing.” Because we feel it's important that we empower the people here and that they feel safe and that they know that we're protecting their families from danger. ”
He added: “I think we can all agree that 99.9% of the people who come here from other countries are a lot like my family. They came here illegally and worked as street vendors for a long time. “But they were able to buy their own things,” he added. They returned home and both are now citizens. My parents weren't worried about being deported when they took me to school or went grocery shopping. So we are trying to protect the 99.9% of people who fall into that category and from falling for this president-elect's divisive tactics. ”
