The Washington Post will soon fire its senior politics editor as the fallout from President-elect Donald Trump's decisive election victory continues to wreak havoc on liberal media outlets across the country.
According to Thursday's report, Lachlan Cartwright The Hollywood Reporter's Dan Eggen, a longtime WaPo employee and current senior political editor, broke the news to colleagues in a cryptic email.
“I struggled to decide how to write this message because it has an unappealing pleading element to it. But lo and behold, I was informed on Monday that I would be removed as senior political editor at the end of the year. I'll leave it to someone else to explain why.
The news was certainly a shock considering Eggen's long career with the outlet. Eggen Eggen first joined the newspaper more than 25 years ago and was promoted to senior political editor in 2022. Cartwright added that Eggen has publicly said he is “devastated” by the decision to fire him.
It remains to be seen whether Eggen will remain with the outlet after his apparent demotion.

The move comes just weeks after WaPo refused to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, the second-largest left-wing news organization in the 2024 election. The Los Angeles Times similarly chose not to endorse candidates, leading to a spate of resignations and a significant decline in subscription numbers.
