Florida Republican Rep. Mike Walz plans to resign from Congress on January 20 to become President-elect Donald Trump's national adviser, according to Politico.
This is the day President Trump is scheduled to take the oath of office.
Walz will remain in office in the Jan. 3 House Speaker election vote. During this session, House Speaker Mike Johnson will be vying for his first term in control of the Republican conference. Politico said. Following reports of Walz's resignation, Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd officially set a primary election for Walz's successor on January 28th, and a general special election on April 1st, CBS News reported. reported.
Candidates will be eligible to enter the race from Dec. 6 to Dec. 7, according to CBS News. Following Byrd's announcement, state legislators interested in running for the seat vacated by Walz have until the end of Tuesday to submit their resignations. These resignations do not have to take effect immediately.
