Islanders blow lead as third-period struggles reappear in loss to Red Wings

So perhaps one win doesn't indicate that the Islanders have solved many problems.

Just when you thought the Islanders were out of their “Groundhog Day” doom loop in the third period, “I Got You Babe” came over the clock radio Monday night and the Islanders were back at the starting point. I returned to

If anyone has a sense of humor about that, they probably don't live in Elmont.

The Islanders were trailing on a third-period comeback for the fourth time in the last five games, but the Red Wings came back to win 4-2 on Monday night at UBS Arena.

They squandered their chance to get over .500 for the first time in a month and their second straight win of the season.

And while they felt confident in holding the lead against the Blues two nights ago, any chance to build confidence late in the game disappeared as if magician David Blaine was behind the bench.

Indeed, the Islanders are back to the question of how they can play so many 45-minute games and so few 60-minute games.

They had a chance to extend their lead in this game, but after effectively finishing off the first 8:33 of the third, Dylan Larkin tripped Jean-Gabriel Pageau for a power play opportunity.

Not only did the Islanders fail miserably to convert it, but their third power play of the night came to nothing, as Larkin's dominant center fielder Semyon Varlamov came just a minute from the end of the game. He scored a finish to tie the match.

Just 2 minutes and 23 seconds later, Detroit held a 3-2 lead thanks to a run from Lukas Raymond (who had scored the game-winning goal against the Islanders late in regulation on Thursday), but the young Swede was caught by Simon. – Chipped Edvinsson's shot from the left side.

Another 45 minutes wasted.

Lee gave the Islanders an early 1-0 lead with a one-time shot from the left circle, and a series of strong shifts by the top line got the night started.

The Islanders led Detroit without a shot until 12:23 into the game, when Andrew Copp's feed sailed past Varlamov and into the left circle, setting up Moritz Seider for the Red Wings' second goal. When that happened, it all proved to be in vain.

Kyle Palmieri broke a 1-1 tie 7:42 into the second set, riding on a rebound from Brock Nelson to become the first Islander to reach double-digit goals.

Isaiah George also made the first shot, scoring his first NHL point on a tipped play by Nelson.

The Islanders found themselves in a nearly identical situation just four nights earlier in Detroit against the same opponent, holding a slight but noticeable edge for the first 40 minutes while playing a frustratingly slow game against the Red Wings. .

That match was 1-0. The game was 2-1, but both of the Islanders' penalty kills were great against a high-end Detroit power play, and like they did Thursday, Monday they had to build a lead in the third. We entered the period.

And just like Thursday, the Islanders chose the worst of those options.
