This excitement turned into smoke.
An Uber Eats driver in New Jersey thought he was delivering a burrito to a customer, but realized he was actually smoking marijuana after smelling an unmistakable strong odor, police said.
According to Washington County police, a woman received what appeared to be a routine food order Friday night at a location in Lindenwold, Camden County: a burrito wrapped in a tin, soup and a water bottle.
However, while driving, I noticed a smell coming from the food bags. It wasn't carnitas.
“She believed there was something strange in the package that was delivered to her. She thought it smelled like marijuana,” said Washington Township Police Chief Patrick Grushik. 6 told ABC.
She stopped the car and called the police.
When officers arrived, “they inspected the package at the store and determined it was not a burrito,” Grushik said.
“There was no meat, no lettuce, no beans, no rice. It was actually an ounce of marijuana,” he said.
Photos from the police department show a large ziplock bag containing the pot crumpled in aluminum foil.
Police said the food did not come from a restaurant and the suspects likely used Uber's package delivery option.
Uber doesn't allow the delivery of medicines, alcohol, or other illegal drugs.
An Uber spokesperson called the incident “very concerning” and urged drivers to contact local authorities if they see or smell anything suspicious.
No charges have been filed in this incident.
Washington Township police experienced a similar situation over the summer when an Uber driver was asked to deliver a fake gift card, 6ABC reported.
