Victor Davis Hanson, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, compared Democratic mayors blocking President-elect Donald Trump's mass deportation plan to the Nullification Crisis of 1832 in South Carolina on a podcast Tuesday.
Democratic Mayor Mike Johnston vowed Thursday to refuse to support President Trump's mass deportation campaign, insisting he had the support of city police and residents. On “The Victor Davis Hanson Show,” the host criticized Johnston and suggested that federal funds should be withheld from the city if Trump doesn't respond.
“That's rebellion. That's exactly what South Carolina did in 1832,” Hanson said. “Think about it: 'Donald Trump is a Maoist genocidal type of government, and all these people are dissidents.'” The irony is that the city of Denver is feeding and housing these immigrants. The only way he can provide that is by getting federal funding. What we should do is claim in any jurisdiction that we are going to invalidate federal laws just like our Confederate ancestors did because we are morally superior to the federal government.60 There are just 10,000 people. So we're not going to enforce federal immigration law.”
“He should say, 'Everyone has a choice.' If that's your choice, Mayor, Mr. Johnson, I applaud your honesty and courage. What's going to happen next? Immigration. You won't get a dime of federal funding to house it, and if you keep doing that every week you'll end up doing another federal program that you don't get because you hate the federal government! ,” Hanson added. “That means you won't be receiving any federal highway funding next week, Federal Education. Just keep going and tell me when you want to stop.”
Hanson also said the left is failing to address voters' concerns, as polls consistently show majorities saying the economy, inflation and immigration are their top issues. (Related article: 'They run our economy': Los Angeles City Council member boasts city has 'largest undocumented population')

“They had no constituencies, they had nothing for transgender excesses. They had nothing against open borders. They had nothing against Afghanistan or China's balloon-shaped They had nothing against foreign policy. They don't support theory, critical race theory, DEI, anything. That's why they don't understand it. This mayor is an insurrectionist. They were against an insurrectionist. It's very interesting because they say, “They're a party to the rebellion,'' Hanson continued.
“We saw it in the Senate [Bob] Casey. He finally threw in the towel. But even though it was mathematically impossible for him to win in a recount, he still tried to fix the ballots. However, only if the pre-selected county/jurisdiction is blue. In other words, he didn't care that if the ballot he had turned out like this, he might have to amend it according to his interpretation of how the law should operate. [David] McCormick votes. ”
Former President Trump vowed throughout his campaign to close the border and deport millions of illegal immigrants who entered the country under the Biden-Harris administration. On November 11, President Trump announced Tom Homan, the former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as his new “border czar.”
After Johnston pledged to resist mass deportation efforts, Homan warned that the Democratic mayor “could go to jail” if he thwarted Trump's efforts.
“All he has to do is watch Arizona vs. America and realize he's breaking the law. But look, me and the mayor of Denver agree on one point. He's going to go to jail and I'm going to put him in jail because there's a law, it's Title 896 United States Code 1324(iii),'' Homan said Monday.
