Trump Administration Will Hold Unusual Leverage to Push Change in South Africa

The incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump will have an important opportunity to encourage change in South Africa, which has tilted toward kleptocracy at home and support for an authoritarian regime abroad.

One opportunity to leverage is the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). This is a trade agreement that benefits South Africa and several other African countries by providing duty-free access to the US market. Agoa is updated It expires in 2015, but is only extended until the end of the 2025 fiscal year, so it expires at the end of September.

If South Africa does not stop supporting Russia and China's foreign policy adventures and change its approach to the Middle East, the United States could remove South Africa from AGOA or terminate the agreement altogether. For example, South Africa should drop its bogus “genocide” case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), such as South Africa's current attempt to rename a street in front of the Republic of South Africa. The senseless support for terrorism and anti-Israel behavior must stop. The US Consulate General in Johannesburg in the wake of the infamous Palestinian airline hijacking in the 1970s.

Another opportunity for leverage is the G20 summit in November 2025, which South Africa will host. 1 report suggest The South African government said it would use the summit to highlight Palestinian grievances against Israel, a repeat of the disastrous 2001 United Nations World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa. The Trump administration should boycott the G20 meeting in South Africa. Until Africa stops being anti-Israel.

Finally, the race to host the 2040 Summer Olympics is underway. Africa has never hosted the event before, and Egypt is set to become the first African country to host it. The US could push ahead with its bid to South Africa, which would include ending racist “black economic empowerment” policies that benefit only a small elite and undermine infrastructure and economic growth. This is limited to cases involving internal and external reforms. .

South Africa remains the United States' most important strategic partner in Africa. The need for change is undoubtedly urgent.
