Trudeau reportedly flies to meet Trump at Mar-a-Lago after tariff threat

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau flew to Florida for talks after President-elect Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Canada and two other countries.

Associated Press quotes sources I'm saying Prime Minister Trudeau was scheduled to have dinner with President Trump at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Palm Beach, Florida. Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc is also said to have accompanied Trudeau on his visit.

“We're going to have a lot of really constructive conversations with President Trump that will help us continue to move forward on the right track for all Canadians.”

President Trump on Monday announced that unless Canada and Mexico take steps to stem the flow of illegal aliens and illegal drugs into the United States through their respective borders, both countries will face a 25% penalty on the first day of his second term. issued a statement that it would be done. He also said China would face an additional 10% tariff unless it takes further steps to block fentanyl shipments to the United States.

Mexico's newly elected President Claudia Sheinbaum wrote an open letter to President Trump saying that while her country could respond with its own tariffs, a trade war would only lead to job losses and higher inflation on both sides. I warned you.

“Mexico's major exporters to the United States include General Motors, Stellantis, and Ford Motor Company, which entered Mexico 80 years ago,” she wrote. “Why would we impose tariffs that put them at risk?”

Prime Minister Trudeau previously told reporters that he would resolve the tariff threat by speaking directly with President Trump.

“We're going to work together to address some of the concerns” on Prince Edward Island, he said. “But ultimately, through the many truly constructive conversations I will have with President Trump, we will continue to move forward on the path that is right for all Canadians.”

He also argued that tariffs would only hurt both countries.

“It's important to understand that when Donald Trump says things like that, he means to follow through. There's no question about that,” Trudeau said. “Our responsibility is that he will not only harm Canadians who are very cooperative with the United States, but he will actually also raise prices for the American people and harm American industry and business. To point it out.”

Some defenders of President Trump's tariff threats argue that tariffs are merely a negotiating tool used to force other countries to advance U.S. interests.
