At a hearing in September, James compared the need for age verification in app stores to the need to show ID when purchasing alcohol or cigarettes.
“When entering a convenience store, we require ID to be checked to purchase cigarettes, alcohol, and lottery tickets. We also require that children have access to those products inappropriately. We’re going to hold the stores accountable, not the suppliers,” the Michigan Republican said.
During a House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing, James called Google and Apple a “duopoly” that controls the most dominant app stores. He added that his and Lee's proposal protects privacy and does not place an onerous burden on app developers to verify users' ages.
