President Biden, 82, met with African leaders Wednesday at the Trans-African Summit in the Lobito Corridor, but appeared to be adrift with his eyes closed during several parts of the meeting.
Biden's sleepy moment sparked a backlash on social media, with users criticizing the Democratic lame-duck president's efficiency in old age.
“Biden literally falls asleep during a meeting in Africa. Who's running the country?” said Jake Schneider, rapid response director for President-elect Trump's campaign.
“Joe Biden fell asleep during a meeting with African leaders today. He's still sharp! Honestly, I feel like this was intentional. 3 Days to Africa Who put an 82 year old on a plane for a trip?! 3 days! Totally stupid,” wrote Outkick founder Clay Travis.
“Mr. Biden has been sick since earlier today. This is actually insane. It's ridiculous to think that millions of Democrats were ready to vote for him to win a second term.” added another user.
Biden's visit to Angola ended with a US $1 billion pledge to send humanitarian aid to Africans dealing with food insecurity and displacement due to a “historic drought.”
“The United States continues to be the world's largest provider of humanitarian aid and development assistance. That's going to increase, and you would think that's the right thing for the richest country in the world to do,” Biden said at the summit. said. “Today I am announcing more than $1 billion in new humanitarian assistance to Africans forced from their homes by historic drought and food insecurity. You know you're looking for something. You're looking for investment.”
Biden also announced that the United States would provide an additional $600 million to invest in a proposed rail corridor that would reportedly cross the African continent.
Biden's latest African investment and humanitarian aid package was announced as American residents of North Carolina continue to struggle to recover from the damage caused by Hurricane Helen. Many low-income families are forced to live in large tents while their destroyed homes are being rebuilt.
