Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) appeared on Fox News Channel's “The Ingraham Angle” and warned against efforts to bring Ukraine into NATO.
The Missouri Republican said such a move risks sparking conflict with Russia “now and forever.”
A partial transcription follows:
INGRAHAM: Well, it's a deal that Biden and company put together at the beginning of this war, before the war even started. That way war could have been avoided. What they end up with appears to be even worse than if they had not done this at all. At least it looks that way. It may change. But now, Senator Zelensky, has a magical solution to ending the war. clock.
(start of video clip)
Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine (via translator): If we want to stop the hot phase of the war, we should bring the Ukrainian territory we control under the umbrella of NATO.
(end video clip)
INGRAHAM: Senator, your response.
Holly: No, absolutely not. They should not allow any part of Ukraine to join NATO. And listen, this administration has already greenlit the use of American weapons on Russian territory, risking World War III. What would happen if Russia responded by sending weapons, missiles, etc. into the territory of NATO countries? We would all be at war. Now, the idea of expanding NATO to include Ukraine is extremely dangerous. It's a recipe for constant conflict, including American soldiers on the ground in Europe wearing boots from now until eternity. That's a disastrous thought. That's just the wrong thing to do.
Listen, I have one more point about the need to resolve this conflict. Laura, what the Biden administration has been telling senators behind closed doors for literally two years is that we need a negotiated peace. The Secretary of State said that two years ago. So in public they say that war will last forever. Behind closed doors, they say, “We have to negotiate.''
Ingraham: Yes.
Holly: They just don't want to make the hard choices to do it. And here we are.
