Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealth Group Insurance, was shot and killed in a possible targeted attack outside a New York City hotel on Wednesday morning. CNBC reportedsaid a person familiar with the matter.

The New York Post, citing police sources, reported that a masked gunman waited on Thompson, fired repeatedly, and then fled eastbound off Sixth Avenue.

CNBC reports that a New York City Police Department spokesperson confirmed that a 50-year-old man was shot in front of 1335 Americus Avenue at 6:46 a.m., but a spokesperson did not confirm the man's identity. He added that there was no.
An official NYPD report said the man suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, and he was unconscious, unresponsive and in critical condition upon arrival at Mount Sinai West Hospital, the news network added. He was later pronounced dead.
No arrests have been made and an investigation is ongoing, CNBC reported, citing the New York City Police Department.

UnitedHealth Group was hosting an investor day at the hotel, CNBC reported, adding that the insurance giant canceled the day's activities after reports of the shooting came to light. Thompson led United Healthcare, the largest private health insurance company in the United States, the news network reported.
UnitedHealth Group did not immediately respond to a request for comment, according to CNBC, but added that the company had not confirmed any shootings during the day for investors.

Witnesses told the newspaper, adding that the suspect was seen wandering around the Sixth Avenue hotel area.
A police source told the newspaper, adding that when the suspect spotted Thompson, he opened fire from a distance, hitting him multiple times. The suspect then fled through Ziegfeld's alley and fled on a bicycle, the newspaper reported.
Officials told the Post that the gunman was not a guest at the hotel, but noted it was unclear whether he had other business to attend to while there.
Citing Thompson's LinkedIn account, the newspaper said he had worked at UnitedHealthcare for the past 20 years, became CEO in 2021 and was based in the company's Minnetonka, Minn., office.
