Teams are asking about Brett Batty this winter. The Mets aren't in a hurry to trade the third baseman, but outside interest is understandable given Batty's potential development and what the team's roster will look like by spring training.
The dominoes will soon start falling, starting with Juan Soto making a decision (likely within the next week) about where he will play the next 12-plus seasons. If it's the Mets, who have a contract worth over $600 million or even $700 million, does that mean moving on from Pete Alonso, who is pursuing free agency?
The Mets appear to have Mark Vientos as their third baseman for the time being, but if Alonso leaves, it's more likely that Vientos will move to first base and Batty and possibly Ronnie Mauricio will be third basemen.
And what if Alonso stays? It's hard for Batty, 25, to imagine a future with the Mets. He won the starting third baseman position in spring training last season, but he struggled until mid-May before relinquishing the position.
