Due to gender neutrality, actresses were completely shut out at the Gotham Awards in New York on Monday, with leading and supporting awards going to male performers.
Actresses including Nicole Kidman, Demi Moore, Mikey Madison, Saoirse Ronan and Marianne Jean-Baptiste all went home empty-handed.
The Gotham Independent Film Awards introduced a gender-neutral acting category in 2021, at a time when the entertainment industry was embracing transgenderism and other forms of gender nonconformity.
Other award shows and festivals that aim to be gender neutral include the Independent Spirit Awards, the Berlin Film Festival, and even the MTV Movie & TV Awards.
There have been efforts to pressure the Academy Awards to adopt a gender-neutral acting category, but the academy has so far refused to bow to the pressure campaign.
At Monday's Gotham Awards ceremony, actor Coleman Domingo won Best Actor for A24's prison drama. Sing Sing His co-star Clarence Maclin won Best Supporting Actor.
The Gotham Award, which goes to groundbreaking performers and is always gender-neutral, went to Brandon Wilson. nickel boys, A poetic drama about race relations in the 1960s produced by Amazon-MGM.
The Best Picture Award was chosen by A24. another man.
