Rep. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina) said she was “physically assaulted” by a transgender rights activist at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, after which she was arrested by Capitol Police.
“I was physically assaulted by a male supporter tonight at the Capitol,” the lawmaker wrote to X.
“I put a new brace on my wrist and some ice on my arm and it's going to heal nicely,” Mace added, suggesting he suffered only minor injuries in the incident.
Mace, who has pushed for restricting access to single-sex facilities in the Capitol, said the incident was prompted by “my fight to protect women.”
Capitol Police announced that suspect James McIntyre, 33, was arrested inside the Rayburn House office building in connection with the incident.
McIntyre, from Illinois, is charged with assaulting a government official.
“Shortly before 6 p.m., the Congressman's office received a report of an incident at the Rayburn House Office Building,” the Capitol Police said in a statement. “Officers from the House Division and Threat Assessment Unit pursued the suspect.”
“After questioning, police officers arrested the suspect.”
Capitol Police noted that the Rayburn office building was open to the public at the time of the incident and that McIntyre “went through security screening prior to entering the Capitol.”
Mace and her staff have been the subject of several vile threats following a push by members of Congress to ban transgender women from using women's facilities in the Capitol.
The 47-year-old congressman introduced a resolution to ban transgender bathrooms last month after Rep. Sarah McBride (D-Delaware) was elected to the House of Representatives.
McBride, 34, will be sworn in next month and become the first openly transgender member of Congress.
“Your violence and threats against my life only make me double down on FAFO,” Mace wrote to X after Tuesday's incident.
“All the violence and intimidation continues to prove our point. Women should be safe,” she added in another post. “Your threats will not stop me from fighting for women!”
A spokesperson for Mr. Mace did not immediately respond to The Post's request for comment.
Capitol Police arrested more than a dozen people last week after transgender activists, including notorious military leaker Chelsea Manning, protested in front of women's restrooms inside the Capitol.
These individuals were charged with crowding, obstruction, or inconvenience.
