Rangers’ Peter Laviolette tinkers with power play again

BUFFALO — Head coach Peter Laviolette recently reserved some power-play tweaks for the second unit.

But it wasn't on the second power play that the Rangers with the man advantage couldn't get it done.

They just don't get enough ice time to begin with.

Before the Rangers scored a power-play goal to beat the Sabers 3-2 on Wednesday night, PP1 had gone 5-of-26 in the previous 10 games, leaving the Blueshirts with a poor record of 2-8. Ta.

“There was some movement. We took guys out of the lineup,” Laviolette said, referring to when Alexis Lafrenière replaced Chris Kreider, who was suffering from back spasms. he said. “We had other players as well. I wouldn't say they were more effective or less effective. There's some history in that group. You try to balance them out.

“At the end of the day, they're spending a lot of time getting into the offensive zone and looking for opportunities there. And just like our 5-on-5 game, I feel like that's a little bit difficult for me at the moment. We just have to stay in it.”

This has been a topic of discussion surrounding the Rangers for years, but each coach has always taken the same approach.

The history between the first power play units is always too encouraging to give up. Not only has that led to uneven ice time between the two units, but it has also discouraged coaches from interfering with personnel matters.

But with the players on the second unit playing so much better than the stars on the first unit, it begs the question of how long Laviolette's lead is.

The second group, consisting of Wednesday's winner Will Quill, Alexis Lafreniere, Phillip Sitil, Riley Smith and Zach Jones, continues to be adjusted.

First, it was Quill who was ejected before the game against the Blackhawks. This time it was Kaapokakko.

“They're all having a good year,” he said. “That's tough. All of these players could be in the lineup. I think Cools provides a good netfront. He's willing to be out there, similar to what Chris Kreider does.” A guy who walks in and stands there and just catches your eye. All of that was effective in that situation.”

Igor Shesterkin started Wednesday night against the Sabers, making his 21st start of the season.
