Last Friday, a Jewish community center in Cape Town was the target of an attempted terrorist attack, but the plot was thwarted when explosives were discovered on the premises of the building before it could be detonated.
The center houses the community's main institutions and is located across the street from the historic Gardens Synagogue.
of South African Jewish Report reported:
Last Friday, December 6, 2024, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was thrown into the premises of the Jewish Community Office in Cape Town's Gardens, and for the first time in many years, Cape Town's Jewish population was described by experts as a terrorist attack. “I was exposed to a situation called “.
The IED was discovered unexploded on the premises at 10:30. The site houses the offices of most Jewish community organizations, including women's groups, youth movements, fundraising groups, and Jewish newspapers.
…
As soon as the IED was discovered, law enforcement was notified. “SAPS” [South African Police Services] K9 and bomb disposal unit members investigated the find and the object was declared safe before it was removed for further investigation,” said SAPS spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut.
South Africa's Chief Rabbi, Dr. Warren Goldstein, condemned the terrorist attempt and accused local officials of not speaking out against the attack.
He said on Tuesday: “At the time of this recording, to my knowledge, no statement has been made publicly on behalf of the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa. Premier of the Western Cape. [province]Alan Winde. Or Cape Town Mayor Jordyn Hill-Lewis, which speaks volumes in itself. That's shameful. ”
[Mayor Hill-Lewis was reported to have spoken out later that day, albeit in conditional terms: “Should the SAPS investigation confirm that this was an attempted attack on the Jewish community, I know I would speak for all Capetonians in condemning such an attempt in the strongest possible terms.”
South Africa has accused Israel of “genocide” in an international tribunal, and there has been a large and vocal anti-Israel movement, particularly in Cape Town.
A large anti-Israel protest was scheduled to be held outside the Jewish Community Office earlier this week.
