Dems in disarray over retiring Sens. Manchin, Sinema bucking party-line votes

Several Democratic senators announced their disapproval, with West Virginia's Joe Manchin and Arizona's Kyrsten Sinema casting the final votes.

Mr. Manchin and Mr. Sinema were registered Democrats before changing their affiliation to independent, but they had a habit of breaking away from their previous party voting patterns.

Most recently, Mr. Sinema and Mr. Manchin on Wednesday voted to block President Joe Biden's nominee Lauren McFerran from being re-elected to the National Labor Relations Board, delivering another victory for Senate Republicans. In response, several Democratic Party members criticized the votes of both men, calling them “pathetic” and “disappointing.”

This isn't the first time Manchin and Sinema have clashed with Democrats.

“We have a tradition of balance on the board, and that's important, so it's disappointing that we couldn't do that,” Democratic Sen. Tina Smith of Minnesota said. said.

Like Sinema and Manchin, Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders also left the Democratic Party and changed his affiliation. Sanders' expression of disapproval of both men's “no” votes was short and polite.

“It's pathetic,” Sanders said.

This is not the first time Mr. Sinema and Mr. Manchin have faced off against Democrats.
