The weight of losing consistently can have long-term negative effects on players who try in vain to turn things around.
We're not just talking about a lost season where everything went wrong. We're talking about back-to-back losing seasons and their cumulative impact. These can ruin a promising career and send a player's psyche into a dark place from which they may never recover or realize their potential.
I've covered the Jets for over 30 years, so I've witnessed it firsthand. I've seen core players at the top end break down mentally because they keep losing. I watched guys like cornerback James Hasty, linebacker Mo Lewis, and safety Brian Washington get upset about losing every year in the '90s.
And with the Jets' current wasteful run, there are concerns about the team's core players, including receiver Garrett Wilson, cornerback Sauce Gardner, running back Breece Hall, and edge rusher Jermaine Johnson.
