Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) told CNN's “Outfront” Wednesday that the federal government needs to tell the public about the mysterious drones flying over the East Coast.
“I don't know what's going on, and I don't know the agency responsible for it. That's why I asked them for answers. At least determine what's going on,” Blumenthal said. What are they doing to ensure that there is a system of rules regarding the altitudes that these drones are allowed to have access to in terms of the kind of remote identification that is required during flight? The location has a set of restrictions, and the FAA, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and FBI There's no explanation as to why such an agency apparently has no idea about any site. There are hundreds of these drones now. People are texting me and voters are alarmed. I'm just as concerned about the lack of disclosure and transparency as I am about the suspicions about what's going on.”
He added: “We should remove them, and there are ways to remove them safely. There are ways to remove them from the air without necessarily shooting them down. And the means we need to take to do so are classified Some are sensitive, some are not, and they are used all over the world in sensitive situations. Now, they may not apply here, but in any case, we are people. You need to control the skies above your home, business, community, or neighborhood. People expect to know that the skies are safe for planes, ambulances, helicopters, and for their own privacy. It's a national security issue. We need to take action. What actions do we take to determine who is operating these drones, who is behind them, and what we intend to do about them? The public needs to know if there are any.”
