Two Republican senators are making the case for an unusual choice to replace House Speaker Mike Johnson following the president-elect's decision to tank the big spending deal he negotiated with House Democrats. .
Republican Sens. Rand Paul (Kentucky) and Mike Lee (Utah) are seeking support from Elon Musk. guided This is an accusation against Mr. Johnson, who will become Speaker of the House of Representatives in the next Congress, regarding his spending bill. Mr. Lee also floated Vivek Ramaswamy, Mr. Musk and co-director of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is responsible for cost-cutting for President-elect Donald Trump, for the speaker role. “The Speaker of the House does not have to be a member of Congress. . . . Nothing disrupts this swamp more than electing Elon Musk. . . Think about it . . . Nothing is impossible.” and paul I wrote Thursday morning at X. (Not to mention the joy of watching the collective ruling class, also known as the “Unionist Party,” fall out of love like never before).

“House Republicans should hire either @elonmusk or @VivekGRAmaswamy as their next Speaker,” Lee said. I wrote on Thursday at X.
Lee and Paul are enthusiastically supported DOGE's mission and Musk's pledge to help reduce federal spending, reduce regulation and reduce the size of government. Both senators are sharp criticized Prime Minister Johnson's spending deal ultimately passes before President Trump killed The bill was posted Wednesday night during a series of posts on Truth Social.
House Republicans support Paul and Lee's proposal despite their considerable frustration with Johnson over the failure of a spending bill that included a series of Democratic priorities. There are no MPs yet. (Related article: The craziest thing that happened was Congress snuck into big Christmas spending)
Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massey, a fierce critic of the chairman, on Wednesday became the first House Republican to vote against Johnson's reappointment to the leadership role.
Massey: “I’ll vote for someone else.” said Politico. “I have a few things on my mind. I'm not going to say anything yet.”
No Republicans have announced plans to challenge Johnson for speaker.
It's unclear whether Musk, who co-directs the cost reduction division of the president-elect's Office of Government Efficiency and is the CEO of four companies, is interested in the role. The speakership has always been held by a sitting member of the House of Representatives, but there is no provision in the constitution that prohibits unelected members from holding the role.
MPs are scheduled to vote on Mr Johnson to become the next speaker on January 3.
Trump's transition team did not immediately respond to a Daily Caller News Foundation inquiry about whether it intended to support Johnson's proposal for Trump to remain in the chair for two more years.
