It's been five years since JK Rowling, the creator of the Harry Potter series, made her first social media post criticizing offensive transgender activists.
Rowling reshared an old Twitter post from December 19, 2019 (before it became X) in which she slammed those who fired a British woman who claimed she had only two genders. The tweet marked the beginning of five years of outspokenness by Rowling against those who say there is no difference between trans women and biological women.
“Five years ago today, my only regret is not speaking up sooner to protect our rights and boundaries,” she captioned an old post from Wednesday. To all the girls and women who have fought and paid a huge price, and to all people.” To those of you who are working to stop horrific medical experiments on minors, we salute you. ”

Since that post, Rowling has found herself at the center of a fierce online culture war, losing employees, fans and even close friends.
Famous stars of the Harry Potter film adaptations also condemned the author's views. British actor Daniel Radcliffe, who played the film's title character, wrote an open letter to LGBTQ advocacy group The Trevor Project in 2020 criticizing Rowling's stance.
