Donald Trump Raises Stakes for Mike Johnson to Save Embattled Speakership

President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday laid out a path for House Speaker Mike Johnson to retain the speakership in the next Congress.

Mr. Johnson's chairmanship is in jeopardy after his plan to rush through pork-heavy spending measures has angered Mr. Trump and Elon Musk, whom the president-elect has appointed to lead the government in cutting waste. .

President Trump's roadmap to Prime Minister Johnson appears to set out a set of reasonable demands, but Trump's demands may be difficult to achieve given the possibility of a government shutdown before Christmas. .

johnson If Trump “acts decisively and forcefully” and eliminates “all the traps that the Democrats have set up” in the spending package, “it will be easy for him to remain the voice.” said Brooke Singman of Fox News.

“Anyone who supports a bill that does not respect the Democratic quicksand known as the debt ceiling should be removed and disposed of as soon as possible,” he said.

Trump added: “If the Speaker can act decisively and forcefully and remove all of the traps set by the Democrats that are destroying our country, economically and otherwise, he will easily continue as Speaker.” Ta.

There is a revolt within the Republican Party aimed at ousting Mr. Johnson. Because of the slim incoming Republican House majority, Mr. Johnson only needs to lose one Republican vote to remain speaker in early January.

punch bowl reported On Mr. Johnson's precarious position Wednesday evening:

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has already said he will not support Johnson as speaker. Massey was leaning in that direction, but said the CR fiasco was a “tipping point.”

And we've heard from multiple sources that there are more Republicans (at least two) in Massie's camp. Some of Johnson's critics have already privately come forward behind the scenes as potential candidates, including House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer. Mr Jordan and Mr Emmer both ran for chair after the council ousted Kevin McCarthy. They both lost. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise may also be a candidate.

Rep. Eli Crane, R-Ariz., said he was “undecided” on whether to vote for Johnson and acknowledged he was discussing potential alternatives behind the scenes. Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) is reportedly leaning toward “no.” Rep. Eric Burleson (R-Missouri), Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.), and Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) have not taken a stance. Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.) has always been a wild card.
