Not even Chargers teammates knew what was going on during free kick

Al Michaels wasn't the only one who was a little confused.

When Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh sent out part of his field-goal unit for a free kick Thursday night, the longtime NFL broadcaster said, He sent out part of his scoring unit, a little-known trick in the NFL rulebook that allows teams to attempt untimed snaps from scrimmage. Field goal attempts under certain rare circumstances.

Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker nailed a 57-yard attempt late in the second quarter that sparked a late 34-27 come-from-behind victory over the Denver Broncos.

“Everyone was trying to understand what was going on.” Chargers linebacker Bud Dupree told ESPN.. “We knew he could make it. We just didn't understand. Was it going to be 2 points, 3 points or was he going to get the ball?” [one-yard line]?We didn't know. ”

Edge rusher Joey Bosa added, “It was definitely a mess.”

“I was ready to go into the locker room, but I’m glad I made the shot.” Bosa, a four-time Pro Bowler, told The Associated Press.. “It was a joke that you can play for 20 years and still not know what's going on on the field. So it was a good moment. It was an important shift in momentum.”

Running back Gus Edwards also waxed poetic about this sentiment, telling ESPN after the game, “I was confused when it was a st.”

“Hey, I don’t know whose idea it was to kick that, but [coach Harbaugh] He knows the ball…I’ve never seen anything like this before,” he said.

Dicker enjoyed it immensely.

“Look around [the Broncos’] As a side note, it was fun,” Kicker said, according to the Associated Press. “They were confused [about] what was happening? It was normal for us because we talk about it every week. ”

When Dicker refers to “us,” he means special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken and assistant special teams coach Chris “Veep” Gould.

“Fickenbeep, we're going to talk about what's next.” [free kicks] at Friday's meeting,” Dicker continued. “We go through it and we go through every possible scenario.”

All scenarios, including one that did not succeed for 48 years.

“We've been trying to get one of those every game.” Harbaugh quipped.still looking rosy from the team's come-from-behind victory. “Cam Dicker stepped up and had success. That was huge and gave us momentum back.”
