Texas Lyft driver says rider slashed his throat, attempted to choke him, stole his car

A Lyft driver in Texas said he was assaulted while riding, a passenger cut his throat, tried to strangle him and then tried to steal his car.

Dillavar Burke, 25, has since been released from the hospital, but remains bedridden and says he is grateful to be alive. fox 4.

A rideshare driver picked up a man in his car Monday, but the man was attacked from behind and his car was stolen, Frisco police said.

The suspect, 19-year-old Antwine Williams, was charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and evading arrest. He also had an outstanding warrant for allegedly encouraging a child to engage in sexual activity.

Mr Burke now has stitches on his neck and a deep cut on his hand with a bandage.

Burke told police he picked up Williams on his way to a Lyft in Frisco, Texas, on Monday night.

When Williams arrived at her destination, Legend at Legacy Apartments, 3700 Legacy Drive, shortly before 6 p.m., the suspect attacked her from behind with a knife, attempting to strangle her. Burke said he then attacked her with a cable or wire.

“Ryder put a knife to Mr. DiLaver's throat and slashed his throat. He did that several times,” Burke's friend Dustin Tovey told FOX 4.

Williams also had an outstanding warrant for allegedly encouraging a child to engage in sexual activity. (St. Petersburg)

“DeLavor put his hand in front of the knife and said to Ryder, “Hey, whatever you want. Just leave me alone.'' Then they put a wire around his neck and DeLavor put his hand out. He was stabbed several times and suffered severe injuries to his fingers and neck,” Tovi continued.

Frisco police said Williams stole Burke's Toyota Camry and left it in the parking lot of her apartment complex. A nearby woman helped Burke and called 911.

A few hours later, patrol officers spotted the vehicle near Highway 423 and Rock Hill. Police attempted to stop the driver, but the driver sped away in an attempt to evade police.

Police said Williams attempted to flee on foot after the collision, but was eventually arrested.

Burke moved to Texas from Türkiye last year and has been sending money back to her parents back home.

“He was a really hard worker. It's really sad to see what happened to him,” Tovi said. “Nobody deserves it, especially Dillavar because he works so hard.”

Williams remains in custody at the Denton County Jail.
