FDA raises Costco egg recall to highest risk level over salmonella fears

Hundreds of thousands of eggs sold at Costco as part of a recall issued last month are contaminated with Salmonella bacteria and can cause serious health problems and death if ingested, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. (There is a “reasonable” possibility that this may occur).

The FDA on Friday designated Handsome Brook Farm eggs sold at Costco stores in the southeastern United States as Category 1, the highest risk level.

Category 1, the FDA states on its site, means there is a recall where there is “a reasonable probability that use of or exposure to the violative product will result in serious health harm or death.”

Last month, more than 10,000 cartons of eggs sold under Costco's Kirkland Signature brand were voluntarily recalled over concerns that they might be contaminated with Salmonella; No one got sick.

The eggs were sold at 25 Costco stores in Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee starting November 22, 2024.

Handsome Brook Farms has initiated a recall after determining that “eggs not intended for retail distribution were distributed in retail packaging.”

“We are implementing additional supply chain management and retraining to prevent this from happening again,” the company said.
