According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), one of the world's most active volcanoes is currently erupting.

“This is a very exciting time,” said Ken Hong, scientist in charge of the USGS Hawaii Volcano Observatory.
The Hawaii Volcano Observatory said the eruption began at 2 a.m. local time on Monday, raising the Kilauea Volcano Warning System to the highest alert level within the closed area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Hong said lava continued to flow out at a “very high rate,” which is common in the early stages of an eruption. He also added that the maximum height of the lava fountain was about 200 feet.
According to the USGS, activity is currently limited to the summit caldera.
However, the main cause of concern is the high concentration of volcanic gases, mainly water vapor, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide.
Officials said the gas can produce a visible fog known as volcanic smog, which could have widespread effects downwind. Volcanic ash and other volcanic particles can irritate people's skin and eyes, so local residents and visitors are urged to limit exposure.
