Officer Killed While Confronting Armed Man in Grocery Store

Michael Horan, a Greensboro, North Carolina, police officer, was shot and killed Monday after confronting a man who was reported to have a firearm at a Food Lion grocery store.

ABC11 reported Horan arrived at the scene and confronted the man, and “a brief struggle ensued,” police said. During the struggle, the man pulled out a gun and shot Horan, killing him.

Duplin County Sheriff's Office noticed“The suspect fled the scene and was taken into custody by law enforcement following a high-speed chase that ended near Duplin County.”

Horan joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 2000 and became a police officer in 2018. He was also a husband and a father.

“Please keep Mr. Horan's family, the Greensboro Police Department, and the community and friends affected by this tragedy in your prayers,” the Duplin County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
