The prize for Tuesday night's drawing increased to $1 billion ($448.8 million for the cash option) from Monday's estimated $970 million, lottery officials said.
Winning numbers will be drawn at 11:00 PM ET (8:00 PM PT). If someone hits the winning ticket, it will be the largest prize ever won in the December drawing.
The jackpot prize has continued to rise since the last win reached $810 million in Texas on September 10th.th. In Friday night's final drawing, no ticket matched all six numbers: winning numbers 2, 20, 51, 56, 67 and the gold Mega Ball 19.
According to Mega Millions, the current jackpot is the seventh largest in the history of the game. Last year, a Florida player won the largest jackpot in history when he won $1.602 billion in the August drawing.
Mega Millions tickets can be purchased in 45 of the 50 U.S. states, as well as Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tickets are $2 per play. Drawings take place on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11pm EST.
