Despite debuting the 12-team College Football Playoff format, it failed to garner nearly the same viewership as the NFL.
SMU vs. Penn State aired at 12pm ET and was watched by an average of 6.4 million viewers on the TNT network.

The clashing NFL game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans began at 1pm ET and averaged 15.5 million viewers on NBC.
The NFL and college football clashed again in the late afternoon, with the Clemson vs. Texas game starting at 4pm ET and the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens game starting immediately after at 4:30pm ET.
The Steelers-Ravens game drew an average of 15.4 million viewers on FOX, while the Clemson-Texas game drew 8.6 million viewers on TNT.
When the NFL wasn't competing with the College Football Playoff, viewership for the other two games was significantly higher.

The first game of the new 12-team system, Indiana vs. Notre Dame, aired Friday night and averaged 13.4 million viewers on ABC/ESPN.
Saturday's only game not competing with the NFL did well, with Tennessee and Ohio State averaging 14.3 million viewers on ABC/ESPN.
The overall average audience of 10.6 million viewers for the first round of the College Football Playoff was higher than all but four college games this season.
College football and the NFL are set to clash again on Saturday, with the NFL playing three games throughout the day ahead of its bowl game.

Los Angeles Chargers and New England Patriots at 1 p.m. ET, Denver Broncos and Cincinnati Bengals at 4:30 p.m. ET, Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams at 8:10 p.m. ET play.
One of Saturday's notable bowl games will be No. 18 ranked Iowa State facing No. 13 ranked University of Miami in the PopTarts Bowl starting at 3:30 p.m. ET.
The other big game is scheduled to take on No. 23 Colorado and No. 17 BYU in the Alamo Bowl at 7:30 p.m. ET, with top draft prospects Shedule Sanders and Travis Hunter expected to face off. has been done.
