Most of the Chicago Bears' coaching staff will be on the unemployment line after this season, but they still didn't make one of the NFL's most notable decisions in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Seahawks. .
Trailing 6-3 with 2:14 left in the fourth quarter, the Bears tried to score on a fourth-and-1 from their own 39-yard line, but a false start set them back five yards.
Interim coach Thomas Brown then punted with all three timeouts remaining, but then used the timeout to get the offense back out there and attack again.
“There was no confusion at all, I just changed my mind,” Brown told reporters after the game. “I switched gears and said, ‘Okay, let’s do it,’ and sent the offense back onto the turf.”
Bears fans booed the team for wasting a timeout, but the call was temporarily saved when Caleb Williams lofted a pass to receiver DJ Moore for a first down.
Fans were also furious when Brown called another timeout as the clock stopped after Williams threw the ball away on third-and-10 from the Seahawks' 40 with 35 seconds left.
“It allowed us to communicate cleaner, get out of the huddle and snap the ball faster,” Brown said of using another timeout. “We didn't want to waste any plays. We needed to take a timeout in terms of delaying the game, and that was the whole reason for burning the timeout.”
Brown also did not trust his kicker to make a 57-yard field goal to tie the score, opting instead to play 4th-and-10, resulting in the game-clinching interception.
Fans took their patience to the limit in Chicago.
After starting the season 4-2 and seemingly destined for 5-2, Jaden Daniels stepped back and called a Hail Mary after defensive back Tyrik Stevenson started yelling at Commanders fans. He made the throw and successfully completed it to win the Week 8 game.
Chicago has lost 10 straight games and is now 4-12.
Brown replaced coach Matt Eberflus, but neither coaching staff found success as the rookie quarterback regressed throughout his first season.
Bears fan and WWE wrestler CM Punk destroyed the team's ownership group on Christmas Day.
“I told you nothing will change until the McCaskeys sell the team.” punk said Before the Chiefs vs. Steelers game. “We're live on Netflix, but I don't care. I've been there. Oh, Lovie Smith is going to change the Bears. Oh man. [Mitchell] Trubisky is going to change things for the Bears. Then trade up and lose [Patrick] Mahomes. ”
Chicago ends a terrible season on the road against the Packers next week.
