Air Canada Flight Makes Emergency Landing, Plane Catches Fire While Skidding Down The Runway

A plane made an emergency landing without landing gear at a Canadian airport and skidded off the runway, causing a fire.

On Saturday, Air Canada Flight 2259 from St. John's caught fire when its wheels did not deploy properly during landing. CBC Reported.

Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick said. toronto star It said the flight “may have had a problem with the landing gear,” but none of the 73 people on board were seriously injured.

Nikki Valentine, a passenger on the plane, said of the incident: CBC.

“The plane started sitting at about a 20-degree angle to the left, and when that happened, as the plane's wings started sliding along the pavement, there was a fairly loud sound, almost like a crash. “I think it was probably the engine,” Valentine said. “The plane was shaking quite a bit and we started seeing fire on the left side of the plane and smoke started coming in through the windows.”

She said the plane remained on the runway for “a significant period of time” while the pilot tried to resolve the incident.

Valentine reported that after the jet came to a halt, most of it was engulfed in flames, and it took nearly two minutes for everyone to escape. After the passengers got off the plane, they were put on a bus.

Halifax Airport was closed for approximately 90 minutes after the incident as emergency crews extinguished the fire and removed the aircraft from the runway. During this time, four planes were diverted and several more were significantly delayed or canceled.

Airport officials said the runway underwent extensive inspection before normal operations resumed.

The incident occurred just hours after a South Korean plane skidded off the runway, crashed into a wall and burst into flames, killing 179 people.
