If you thought something called the Poptarts Bowl couldn't turn into a serious incident involving fights between players on the same team, you were wrong.
During the second quarter, redshirt senior Simeon Burrow Jr. and freshman Marquise Lightfoot got into an altercation on the sideline. That in itself is not that unusual. But this beef was more than just an argument. It turned into a fight.
Much of the tension could be attributed to the fact that the Hurricanes were playing in the Poptarts Bowl. Miami spent most of the year in the top 10 and even top 5, repeatedly coming back from the brink of defeat to win. However, that luck ran out when the Canes lost to Syracuse in the final game of the season.
The loss eliminated Miami from competing for a spot in the ACC Championship Game and, by extension, the College Football Playoff.
Things looked promising for the Canes early in the game, with future first-round draft pick Cam Ward leading the offense. Mimi headed to the locker room at halftime with a 31-28 lead. But Ward missed the second half, and things fell apart for Miami from there.
As winners of the Poptarts Bowl, the Cyclones were treated to the Poptarts mascot and were “toasted” at the end.
Iowa State won the game 42-41.
