Trump says he thinks Johnson has the votes to get confirmed

President-elect Trump firmly believes that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) will win a second term.

“Nobody else can get the vote,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

President Trump on Monday expressed his complete and utter support for Johnson, days before the House vote on Friday to select a new speaker.

His comments echo those of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), who earlier in the day questioned Republicans who opposed Mr. Johnson on X.

Gingrich: “I don't understand what House Republicans think they can gain by opposing Speaker Mike Johnson.'' I wrote X Tuesday.

“They don't have anyone who can get more votes. They risk undermining President Trump's election victory on January 6th. They are de facto allies of the Democratic Party,” he added. Ta.

Johnson has faced anger from Republican lawmakers over his handling of a range of issues, including his year-end funding package to keep the government running. Some House Republicans, including Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), question his ability to lead the party in a three-way race in the Senate and White House.

Assuming all Republicans attend and vote for their nominee in Friday's speaker election, only one Republican can leave the party. All 215 incoming Democratic members of the House are expected to vote for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, and 219 Republicans are also expected to attend.
