The Sugar Bowl matchup between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Georgia Bulldogs, scheduled for Wednesday night, was canceled due to a deadly shooting on Bourbon Street Wednesday morning that left dozens dead and injured, WDSU in New Orleans reports. The event has been postponed until Thursday due to the terrorist attack.
The early morning revelry that followed New Year's celebrations was shattered around 3:15 a.m. ET Wednesday when a driver drove his truck into the crowd, killing and injuring dozens of people. The driver, identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar, then got out of his car and opened fire on police, injuring two officers.
Din Jabbar was killed, but it is unclear whether his death was self-inflicted or the result of police firing back.
WDSU report Sources confirmed the postponement.
“The Sugar Bowl Committee is devastated by the horrific events that occurred early this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley said early Wednesday. . “We are in ongoing discussions with authorities at the local, state and federal levels and will update you as we learn more.”
Two Sugar Bowl participating schools, Notre Dame and Georgia, released statements in response to the attack.
“We ask our fans to join us in praying for those injured and lost in this senseless act of violence. Guests of the Hilton New Orleans Riverside Hotel , you can join us for the pre-scheduled Mass at 11 a.m., but if you can't, please join us in prayer wherever you are.”
