New Orleans' Sugar Bowl was postponed until the new year, and the Superdome was placed on lockdown following the city's earlier mass casualty attack.
Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley announced in a press conference that the Georgia-Notre Dame game has been postponed for 24 hours.
“By the way, the CFP quarterfinals were scheduled to be played tonight at 7:45 p.m. at the Superdome. We've been in discussions with ESPN, the College Football Playoff, the Southeastern Conference, and the University of Georgia Notre Dame. We've been working on the game 24 hours a day. All parties agree that it is in the best interest of public safety personnel to postpone,” Hundley said.
“We'll have more details on that in the coming hours, but for now, that's our plan to move forward and play the game. Thank you to everyone here for your important work here. I would like to once again express my gratitude to you,” he added.
ESPN reported that the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, where the game will be played, was placed on lockdown Wednesday for security reasons.
The Superdome was a mile away from the New Year's attack in which Shamsud Din Jabar drove a pickup truck with an ISIS flag inside into a crowd, killing 15 people and injuring scores more.
The FBI is investigating the Bourbon Street attack as an act of terrorism.
“My heart goes out to the victims and their families who were just trying to celebrate the holiday,” Biden said. “Violence of any kind is not justified and we will not tolerate attacks against any community in our country.”
