Demi Moore took a swipe at a director that she said once told her she’d never make it to Hollywood in a powerful moment Jan. 5 at the Golden Globe Awards.
Moore won for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy” for her role in “The Substance,” and delivered a very emotional acceptance speech. She spoke candidly about some of the vulnerable moments she experienced over the course of her decades-long career and admitted that she was deeply affected by a director she said made hurtful comments that led her to think she’d never amount to anything as an actress.
“I’ve been doing this a long time – like over 45 years – and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor,” she told the crowd of A-listers that had gathered at The Beverly Hilton hotel for the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards.
“Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me I was a popcorn actress and, at that time, I made that mean this wasn’t something I was allowed to have, that I could do movies that made a lot of money, but that I couldn’t be acknowledged, and I bought in and I believed that,” Moore said.

She went on to admit those words “corroded” her and stayed with her, making her doubt herself.
Moore said she “thought a couple of years ago that maybe this was it,” that maybe she was “done,” and that she had done what she “was supposed to do.”
The famous actress said she was “at a low point” when she received the script for “The Substance,” and that’s when things began to change.
“The universe told me, ‘You are not done,’” Moore told the crowd.

Moore reflected on her own struggles throughout her career and spoke to others who “don’t think we’re smart enough, or pretty enough, or skinny enough, or successful enough, or basically just not enough.”
She ended with a poignant message that brought some of the audience members to tears. (RELATED: Nikki Glaser Took Out The Hollywood Trash In Epic Opening Monologue)
“I had a woman say to me … ‘You can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.’ And so today I celebrate this as a marker of my wholeness … and being reminded that I do belong.”
