After Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation, President-elect Trump proposed a “unification” vision for the United States and Canada, saying there would be no tariffs if the two countries were one.
“If Canada merged with the United States, there would be no tariffs, significantly lower taxes, and complete protection from the ever-present threat of Russian and Chinese shipping.” President Trump posts on his truth social site. “What a wonderful country we will be together!!!”
Prime Minister Trudeau announced Monday that he will step down before the general election later this year. His Liberal Party's poll numbers have slumped amid heightened tensions with President Trump over tariffs.
“This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear that if we are forced to fight domestically, we will not be the best option in that election,” Trudeau said.
After Trudeau's announcement on Monday, President Trump touted that many Canadians would “love” the idea of becoming the “51st state” of the United States.
He said the merger would be beneficial for the United States because it would “no longer be bothered” by the “huge trade deficit” and subsidies it provides to Canada.
“Justin Trudeau knew this and resigned,” Trump said.
Prime Minister Trudeau served as Prime Minister of Canada for nine years and led the Liberal Party for 11 years. The country has faced mounting crises, including the resignation of the Prime Minister and a conflict with President Trump's 25% tariff plan.
In her resignation letter, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland criticized Trudeau for pursuing “expensive political maneuvers” as President Trump threatens to impose tariffs on neighboring countries.
Trump lambasted Trudeau as Canada's “governor” after having dinner with him last month. He also criticized Freeland's “absolutely harmful” behavior.
Prime Minister Trudeau said he would retaliate if President Trump were to push through with higher tariffs, which would make cooperation between the two countries even more difficult.
As Prime Minister Trudeau steps down, the Liberal Party of Canada plans to host a competition to find his replacement.
Liberal MPs are scheduled to host an emergency meeting on Wednesday.
