Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, who was sentenced to 22 years in prison for seditious conspiracy related to the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, has formally asked Donald Trump for a pardon.
A jury convicted Tarrio of helping orchestrate an insurrection. At the time of the attack, Tarrio prohibited In December 2020, he was expelled from the city by prosecutors for burning a banner stolen from a historic Black church during a march protesting President Trump's election loss.
Prosecutors say Tarrio was the driving force behind organizing hundreds of Proud Boys to take part in the January 6 attack, and that several leaders of the far-right extremist group were at the forefront of the violence. He said he was there.
U.S. District Judge Tim Kelly, a Trump appointee, convicted Tarrio and sentenced him to 22 years in prison. This will be the longest sentence of any of the defendants since January 6th.
Tarrio claims in his clemency application that he was unfairly targeted by the Biden administration. President Trump promised a full pardon for the January 6 rioters soon after taking office.
“We're going to look at each individual case, and we're going to do it very quickly, and that's going to start in the first hour of me taking office,” Trump said. And the vast majority of them should not be in prison… They are suffering severely. ”
