A new community notes model will allow users on Meta's social media sites Facebook, Instagram, and Threads to point out posts that are misleading and require more context. This eliminates the need for independent fact-checkers and experts to be held accountable.

“Experts, like everyone else, have their own biases and perspectives. This has manifested itself in the choices some have made about what and how to fact-check… Too often, the shows that were meant to do that became a tool of censorship,” Mehta said.

Additionally, Meta said that its long-standing efforts to moderate content across its platforms have expanded and are “making too many mistakes, frustrating users, and getting in the way of the free expression we are trying to achieve.” It's become too much,” he said. ”

Facebook's parent company says Community Notes will be added in the U.S. in the coming months.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg cited the recent election as a driving force behind the company's decision, accusing “governments and traditional media” of forcing the company to “further censorship.” .

“The recent elections feel like a cultural tipping point in favoring speech again,” he said. “That's why we're going back to basics and focusing on reducing mistakes, simplifying policies, and restoring free expression on our platforms.”

The platform will also stop demoting fact-checked content and add additional information related to posts instead of the company's current method of displaying full-screen warnings that users must click through before viewing a post. Use labels that notify users that information is available.
