Mexican president suggests renaming the United States after Trump’s Gulf of America threat

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday applauded President-elect Donald Trump's threat to rename the Gulf of Mexico, saying the United States should actually be called “Mexico America.”

President Trump, 78, announced Tuesday at a press conference at Mar-a-Lago that he has ambitions to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”

In response, Sheinbaum, 62, showed off a 1607 map that identified the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of Mexico and labeled North America as Mexican America.

“Why not call it Mexican America? Sounds good, right?” the Mexican leader asked, clearly joking.

Sheinbaum added that “with all due respect,” President Trump was wrong to say that violent drug cartels, not “the people,” run Mexico.

President Trump may try to change the labeling of the Gulf of Mexico within the United States, although it has been known as such for centuries.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has already proposed a bill that would provide federal funding for the necessary map changes.

The name change will also cause headaches for the International Hydrographic Organization, which is trying to ensure uniformity in how water bodies are labeled.

“Mexico must stop allowing millions of people to come into our country,” President Trump said Tuesday. “They can stop them. We're going to impose very tough tariffs on Mexico and Canada, because Canada, they're also coming through Canada, and the amount of drugs that are coming in is record.
