US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on January 7 that rapid support forces, which he said in December were committing war crimes, had “committed genocide in Sudan” in continued attacks on civilians.

He announced that Washington was sanctioning RSF leader Mohammad Hamdan Daglo Musa (known as “Hemedi”), seven RSF affiliates, and one other person.

“The United States does not support either side in this war, and these actions against Mr. Hemedi and the RSF do not imply support or favoritism for the Sudanese military,” Blinken said. “Both belligerents bear responsibility for the violence and suffering in Sudan and lack the legitimacy to govern a future peaceful Sudan.”
