Canada deploying 60 firefighters to help with California blazes

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Sunday that 60 firefighters will be sent to California to fight wildfires.

in Post to XPrime Minister Trudeau said Canada is helping provide assistance to the Los Angeles area as multiple wildfires continue to ravage the area.

The death toll from the wildfires had reached 16 as of Saturday night, and the fires were largely uncontained. Additional evacuation orders have been issued.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) declared a state of emergency earlier this week and asked the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to conduct an independent investigation due to questions about the city's supply.

Prime Minister Trudeau sent tankers and firefighters to Los Angeles. Government officials said they were ready to mobilize more personnel and equipment from Ontario, Quebec and Alberta. The New York Times reported.

“We are friends, especially during difficult times,” he wrote. “California has always had our backs as we battled wildfires up north. Now, Canada has yours.”

Mexico also sent troops to help fight the growing fires.

Trudeau's generosity comes at a complicated time for both countries.

Prime Minister Trudeau and President-elect Trump are at odds over Trump's tariff plans to raise prices in Canada. As Prime Minister Trudeau resigned, President Trump suggested a merger between the United States and Canada.
