Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) said Monday that California “doesn't qualify” for funding unless it makes “some changes” after the wildfires.
“When you go to California, you meet a lot of Republicans and good people. I hate them, but they're just overwhelmed by the woke policies of the inner cities, along with the people who vote for them,” Tuberville said. He spoke in a clip on Newsmax's “The Chris Salcedo Show.” Highlighted by Mediaite.
“And that’s… you know, I don’t mind sending them some money, but unless they indicate that they are. [going to] They change their ways and go back to building dams and storing water and doing maintenance with bushes and trees and all the other things that everyone else is doing in this country. They are worthless. Honestly, unless they show us otherwise [going to] Make some changes,” he added.
Recent fires in the Los Angeles area have devastated communities, destroyed property en masse, and left the death toll in the double digits.
On Sunday, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) predicted that “there will be strings attached to any funding that is ultimately approved” for fire aid in the Los Angeles area.
“But do we expect Congress and the Republican Party to still help Americans in need, even if they don't like local politics within the party?” CBS News' Margaret Brennan wrote, “Face the・I asked Barrasso about “Nation.”
“I expect there will be conditions on the funds that are ultimately approved, but that has to do with preparing for the next time, because this time it was a huge failure,” the Wyoming Republican responded.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) expressed concern in an interview aired Sunday that President-elect Trump might withhold federal disaster aid from the Golden State in the wake of the deadly fires.
“He did it in Utah. He did it in Michigan, he did it in Puerto Rico. In 2018, before I became governor, he found out the people of Orange County were voting for him and told them We did that in California until we decided to give the money,” Newsom said in an interview.
