Lemley's decision comes in the wake of recent reforms implemented by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, which the lawyer described as “an attack on toxic masculinity and neo-Nazi insanity.” It is described as “degradation”.
Lemley, a partner at law firm Lex Lumina, sued comedian Sarah Silverman and other writers in 2023 for allegedly infringing copyright by training a Llama AI model based on their written work. Acted as Meta's representative when it sued the company. At the time, Meta's legal team argued that the claim should fail because the authors could not prove that the AI-generated text closely resembled the original content. The case is still ongoing.
In a LinkedIn post on Monday, Lemley expressed disappointment with Mehta's direction, saying, “I think they are on the right side in the generative AI copyright dispute that I represented, and I believe they will prevail. I hope so, but my conscience prevents me from doing so.” Be their lawyer already. Musk has been vocal in his opposition to DEI initiatives and biased left-wing content moderation, and has supported right-wing parties and figures in Europe and the United States. He is also a prominent supporter of President-elect Donald Trump and has been named co-director of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
The change in Mr. Zuckerberg's political stance and relationship with Mr. Trump is a notable departure from previous approaches. In 2020, Trump took to Facebook to express his disgust at the then-president's “divisive and inflammatory statements,” and the platform later tweeted in 2021 that “the violence at the U.S. Capitol on January 6… Trump was barred from entering the country for praising people who have suffered. However, Mehta reversed this decision two years later.
