Conference fines Marshall over withdrawal from college football bowl game

The Sun Belt fined the Marshall Thundering Herd $100,000 for missing the Independence Bowl in December.

Louisiana Tech replaced Marshall in the game against Army, but lost to Army 27-6.

“While the conference acknowledges the medical model and best practice guidance Marshall followed and the fundamental concern for the health and safety of remaining eligible student-athletes to compete in a safe and practicable manner; “The nature and timing of this issue made this decision detrimental to the Sun Belt Conference and its members, the Army, the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl, the American Athletic Conference, and ESPN,” the Sun Belt said in a statement.

Despite the fine, Marshall athletic director Christian Spears said he supported the decision to opt out of the game.

“We could not in good conscience put 41 student-athletes on that field. Again, we will always prioritize the health and safety of our student-athletes,” Spears said. . “But that does not erase the fact that a sincere and formal apology is required.”

Marshall went 10-3 in the regular season, winning its final seven games to capture the Sun Belt championship.

Head coach Charles Huff left Marshall because he was far away on a contract extension with the school instead of playing with Army in a bowl game.

Huff then left Marshall to take the head coaching job at the University of Southern Mississippi. More than 25 players entered the transfer portal over Huff's departure, which resulted in Marshall withdrawing from the game.

Marshall hired North Carolina State offensive coordinator Tony Gibson as its new head coach.
