The layoffs are affecting teams in security, experiences and devices, sales and gaming, two people familiar with the matter said.

A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the size of the layoffs was small, but declined to provide specific numbers. The spokesperson also emphasized that these layoffs are separate from recent layoffs targeted at underperforming employees across the company.

Employees in Microsoft's security division began receiving notices about the layoffs starting Tuesday, one of the people familiar with the situation said. The security division will be led by Charlie Bell, Amazon's former head of cloud who made a surprise move to Microsoft in 2021 to spearhead a revamped cybersecurity effort.

Microsoft has faced a series of security issues in recent years, particularly since what the Department of Homeland Security described as a “series of security failures” that allowed Chinese hackers to access emails from thousands of customers. , focuses on security. In response, the company expanded its Secure Future Initiative last year to make security a top priority for all employees. This commitment was further reinforced by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in an email to employees stating, “When faced with a trade-off between security and other priorities, the answer is clear: do security.'' ” states.

In addition to the security team, the layoffs are also impacting employees in the Experiences and Devices, Sales, and Gaming divisions. These departments play a critical role in Microsoft's product development, customer relations, and entertainment products. The scope of the impact on these teams and the specific roles affected have not been disclosed.
